The Rossway Team were faced with a particular challenge; to design a roof and wall cladding system of standing seam aluminium panels, on to which a timber cladding façade was attached, to achieve the planning requirements and achieve an environmentally friendly building.

The building shape was most unusual, resembling a curved "bottle neck" in section, with convex and concave curves.

The design team devised a system with aluminium panels and aluminium curved extruded "T" shaped bearers, onto which the timber cladding was attached.

The design had to consider both the performance requirements and the safety of installation issues. The solution ensured that the construction sequence could accommodate installation in modular widths, thereby ensuring that access requirements were minimised. In order to ensure that all design and safety issues were recognised and addresses prior to construction, a full size working model was constructed at the Rossway Fabrication facilities. This consisted of a structure some 6m in height and 6m wide, where the convex and concave curved bottle neck shape was reproduced. This enabled all the issues to be considered, most significantly, the safe access requirements for such a bespoke, unique building structure.
